Manufacturing

The Importance of Manufacturing

Not only does the manufacturing industry provide economic stability for the United States, it also contributes to workforce growth in all other industries. According to the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), for every $1.00 spent in manufacturing, another $1.82 is added to the economy – the highest multiplier effect of any economic sector. Plus, for every one worker that takes a job in manufacturing, this generates another 3.4 jobs elsewhere.

Keeping up with the growth of this industry presents a challenge that could have a major impact on the economic growth of the U.S. A 2018 report from Deloitte and The Manufacturing Institute determined that over the next ten years, manufacturers will likely need to add 4.6 million new jobs. While this increase is great, this report also found that 2.4 million of these jobs may go unfilled. This is partially due to a skills shortage that exists in the U.S. manufacturing industry. Between now and 2028, a persistent skills shortage could cost $2.5 trillion in reduced output.

Manufacturing is a main driver in the long-term economic growth of a nation. To keep our country and communities growing strong, we need to make sure our workforce is knowledgeable about jobs in this industry and about the type of skills that are in highest demand for different manufacturing positions.
